Phantasmagoria (Offensive)

Factor Limit: 6
Range: Line of Sight
Area: 1 victim per power factor
Renounce? Target
Opposed: Intuition

This foul power assaults the senses of its victims, inflicting upon them a horror-show that encompasses all the senses. Typical hallucinations include the target being drowned in a tidal wave of blood, or set upon by a host of locusts and stinging bees, or suddenly surrounded by a horrific sacrificial rite. Although no damage is inflicted by the power directly, the victim is often too distracted to defend themselves from far more real dangers. Even if there is no immediate danger coming after the victim, they may find themselves too shaken to continue.

Targets roll Faith (Intuition) to see the phantasms for the lie they are. Compare the successes to the Power Factor:

  • Those who succeed by +2 are unaffected, and immune to further uses of Phantasmagoria by any creature until the next sundown.
  • Those who succeed by +1 are unaffected, and immune to that creature’s Phantasmagoria until the next sundown.
  • Those who get the exact number of successes needed are unaffected and immune to that creature’s Phantasmagoria until the end of the Scene.
  • Those who fail by -1 are Shaken (as per the Fear effect), and suffer a -1 to all skill rolls for the rest of the Scene.
  • Those who fail by -2 are Stunned (as per the Fear effect), and then suffer a -1 to all skill rolls for the rest of the Scene.

In addition to the Fear effects, targets who fail the roll are essentially helpless for as many turns as they failed the roll by. During this time, their Defense Pool is reduced to half (round down), and they may take no actions other than clawing at the terrors preying upon their minds. A successful attack upon them (one that causes damage) will reduce the time by one round per attack—but in extreme cases, this may still be far too late.
